I started playing with my nail package the day after I got it, trying Gabriela (Risqué).

I was never very fond of Risqué polishes. They were streaky, too thin, smelly. I didn't like their coverage, their brush.But Gabriela was a good surprise! It was easy to paint, good coverage, no streaks.



There was a new sparkle that day. "If only I could change nail polishes more often!" But it was still not doable. I didn't have the time nor the patience. And the whole manicure process took WAY too long...

Muito Obrigada, Cleide!!!

The title means 'thank you so much, Cleide', my aunt.

As mentioned in the Drunken Nails post, I was looking for brighter reds.

My aunt decided to join my cause, and sent a whole bunch of reds through my mother-in-law, who came to spend the holidays with us. The polishes arrived right in time for my birthday and Christmas!!

I can't call it nail mail, because it wasn't posted. But it was definitely as exciting to get the package!!

Polishes from left to right, up to bottom:

Risqué: Nunca Fui Santa, Shar Pei, Gabriela, Santa Gula, Doce Orgulho, Coque
Impala: Novo 70 Paz e Amor
Colorama: Garota Verão, Rosa Chiclete, Nariz de Palhaço, Vermelho Ivete, Estréia, 5ª Avenida.

Fancy Jeans

I really wanted to wear my blue Jeans (Colorama) again, and I remembered I hadn't worn the Cobertura Transformadora da Cor - Reflexos Azulados (Colorama). This is a blue shimmer top coat, similar to the golden one.

I absolutely loved the combination. It was so shimmery and sparkly under the sun!!! It was even nicer to have such a sunny day when I wore it, last December...

Drunken Nails

I needed a bright red polish to match my red-and-black dress, but all my reds (at the time I didn't even have 10 dark-coloured polishes) had pink notes to them.

So I went for one of my untried, that I'd brought with me from Brazil: Conhaque (Colorama). It's a dark burgundy with a creme finish, from a product line called Única Camada, which means 'one coat'. I wasn't able to have a good result with only one coat, but it could just be my lack of technique.

I found it hard to clean. It was still stained on my cuticles. As if I were drunk while painting them... :-p

I did like the end result, though! I even got compliments from the waitress at the mexican restaurant I went to. Not only did she love the colour, but she also put my order under the name 'nice nails'!! ;-)

Because I wanted brighter reds, I started asking my aunts (Cleide, Márcia and Tia Má) for their suggestions...

Golden Coffee

Next up was Café (Colorama), which means Coffee. I managed to 'dent' it the same night I put it on, to go to a friend's place. But I forgot to take a picture of the polish on it's own...

With a fancy dinner coming up, I decided to 'fix' it by applying Cobertura Transformadora da Cor - Reflexos Dourados (Colorama). Losely translated, that's a top coat that 'transforms' the colour, by adding golden shimmer. 

It went perfectly with my brown dress, gift from my grandma!

Changing clothes. Wearing Blue Jeans! ;-)

Even though I wasn't pleased by my first attempt at dark colours, results were slowly improving!

No pictures were taken from the improvement, as I repeated the Framboesa for a couple of weeks, or wore light colours that didn't deserve pictures and posts.

Because I had an event with some (many!) Brazilian girlfriends, the chosen one was Jeans (Colorama). One of the friends I was meeting had asked me to bring her this colour the first time I went to Brazil.

Coincidently, another friend was also wearing Jeans. Mine was a lost shinier, and I introduced her to Sally Hansen's Insta-Dri. I call it the 'vermelhinho', Portuguese for 'little red one'.

During the same event, another friend mentioned a Bath & Body Works 'stick' for cuticles and nails, which I later found out to be Almond Oil Nail & Cuticle Pen. Needless to say I was on the look for that! ;-)

Flying solo

My aunt Cleide is the person who introduced me to the 'nail' world. She used to take me to the nail salon every Saturday, when I was 11, in an attempt to stop me from pulling my nails.  Some 15 years later, here I was wearing her favourite darker polish for my first attempt of doing my own colourful nails.

This was Framboesa (Raspberry in Portuguese) from Colorama. A sheer dark reddish pink, I'd say.

It took me a while, and I wasn't exactly thrilled with the results. But I found it OK for a first attempt, hoping it got better with time.

My first time...

OK, it might not have been the first time ever, as I remember wearing a dark shade for my high school prom, many years ago. But this was the first time both my sister and I decided to wear something other than sheer white for no special occasion.

We went to the nail salon, as I do when in Brazil (it's a lot cheaper than in North America!). Teresa (the lady who always does my nails) chose this orange-red shade. Unfortunately, I do not know the name or the brand. I do remember it was not Colorama or Risqué (which will be featured here very often).

Little sis' wore only 2 coats of Plano Perfeito (Colorama), even though she wanted some sheer white coats on top to lighten it up. Oh, how things have changed since then!

The reason behind the blog

Being a Brazilian expat living in Canada, the internet is what connects me to family and friends living 5,000 miles away in sunny Brazil.

When I moved here, I brought along my nail care kit and a few sheer white and pink polishes. Light sheer pink was as bold as I got! But it all changed during my last trip home, in August/September 2011. I came back with darker and colourful polishes, and have been a bit more adventurous ever since. ;-)

I started taking pictures of such adventures and sending them by email to my sister, aunts, and cousins. After a while, I thought it would be a good idea to upload the pictures and leave them here, for them to see it whenever they wanted. And other people can see it too.

My blog "Unhas da Pri Piluinha" is in Portuguese, for them to follow. I thought it would be a good idea to have an English version for my Canadian and English-speaking friends, both in the real world and in the blogosphere, as I've been following quite a few blogs lately.

I like posting my manicures in sequence. It definitely won't be real time for now, except for the occasional interruption. Pictures should be in the same order in both blogs (for the most part). The text, however, will not be an exact translation. There are stories and jokes that mean nothing in English... Therefore, I'm calling this an English version of the blog, and not an English translation.

Enough said. Time to bring the posts here. :-)
